Ancient Egypt - New Technology

Naples, July 5-7, 2023

In the last few years, the world of Egyptology opened its doors to new technologies starting a fruitful collaboration between specialists in Humanities and Digital Technologies and projecting the Ancient World to the Future.

Laser scanning, photogrammetry and 3D modelling enable archaeologists to document the whole excavation process and reconstruct contexts even after they have been physically removed, to reproduce a coffin with sub-millimetric accuracy, to recompose ancient papyrus or pieces of statues spread in different museums; non-invasive diagnostic imaging, X-Ray, CT scan enable to peek inside a sealed vessel, to analyze the chemical composition of ancient pigments, to virtually unwrap mummies. These are only a few examples of the benefits that the new technologies can offer to help humanists reconstruct history, preserve the past and spread it simply outside the limits of Museums, Universities and Research Centers.

On these new research horizons, the Conference “Ancient Egypt - New Technology” wants to allow the ever-growing Humanists and Digital Technologists community to meet, debate and get up-to-date on projects linked to Egyptology. Created in United Stated in 2019 by an idea of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at Indiana University Bloomington and the Indiana University Virtual World Heritage Laboratory, the International Conference is in its 2nd Edition.

The in-person meeting will take place the 5th-7th of July 2023 at the headquarters of the Department of Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean of the University of Naples “L’Orientale”, Palazzo Corigliano located in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore 12 Naples, Italy. A limited number of participants will be able to follow the conference through our zoom platform.
