Bronzeworking Centres of Eurasia. From the Late 2nd Millennium BC to 539 BC

On 30 January, 2024, the first session of the Webinar Series Bronzeworking Centres in Eurasia, organized by Manuel Castelluccia, Megan Cifarelli, and John Curtis, will be held under the auspices of the University of Naples “L’Orientale,” with four sessions to follow on the 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th February.

This webinar series recalls the historic conference at the British Museum in 1986 that brought together leading experts in the bronze metallurgy of cultures in ancient Western Asia to assess the state of the field, and to look broadly at the circulation of bronze technology and artefacts as the Bronze Age came to its conclusion and the Iron Age commenced. The ensuing 1988 volume, Bronze-working Centres of Western Asia, c. 1000–539 BC, has been an indispensable resource for a generation of students and scholars. While time has not diminished its utility, after nearly 40 years of technological, methodological, and theoretical developments in the fields of archaeology, art history, and archaeometry, and of new discoveries made in the field, the time is ripe for a reassessment.

This online conference series, organized in 5 different meetings, will update and expand upon the original volume, presenting a broad look at the manufacture, decoration, use, and exchange of bronze artefacts in regions stretching from the Mediterranean Sea across the enormous expanse of the Eurasian continent to China from the late second millennium to the rise of Achaemenids. The contributions to this series feature a wide range of perspectives and include the work of scholars from Israel, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Russia, China, Western Europe, the UK, Canada, and the United States.
