“The Social Life of Occupied Istanbul, 1918-1923”
Daniel-Joseph MacArthur-Seal (Scuola Superiore Meridionale)

The dramatic political confrontation between the Allied powers, Ottoman government, and Turkish nationalist movement has framed interest in the history of Istanbul’s occupation between the end of the First World War and birth of the Republic of Turkey. This talk focuses on the lesser studied consequences of the occupation for social life in the city and its historical investigation, with reference to my recently published research on sex work, entertainment, and alcohol consumption. It examines the ways in which the sequence of events framing the occupation and liberation of Istanbul and subsequent historiography has obscured potential sources for a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of life in the late Ottoman city that goes beyond the binary opposition of imperialism and resistance.
