Degree courses are divided into various categories defined by the Ministry. There are a total of 43 categories (plus 4 for degrees in healthcare professions) that group together degree courses with similar educational objectives.

Although degree courses belonging to the same category have the same legal recognition, the courses of study can vary considerably due to the autonomy of the universities.

In some cases, in order to access certain professions or participate in public competitions, proof of specific skills may be required, in addition to possession of a qualification belonging to a specific category.

Inter-category courses are degree courses that meet the requirements of two different categories. In these cases, students must indicate the category in which they intend to obtain their degree at the time of enrolment and may change their choice within the third year of the course.

The Master's Degree (LM) entitles students to take the entrance exams for the PhD programme.
