Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

This curriculum focuses on the study of one language and its literature, chosen from French, Spanish, Portuguese, English, German, Swedish, Dutch, Anglo-American, or Spanish-American. It aims to enhance students’ knowledge of languages, cultures, and national literature in their geographical and historical dimensions, with particular reference to colonial history and globalization processes. The curriculum strengthens philological analysis, text analysis, and the study of linguistic hybridity, literary criticism theories, and interdisciplinary connections with theatre and media. Adequate attention is also given to historical, philosophical, anthropological, and geographical disciplines.

Literary Translation

This curriculum enhances students’ knowledge of major Western and Eastern European languages and literatures, aligning skills with the needs of literary translation. It emphasizes engagement with Italian literature, the study of literary Italian, and translation theory. The selection of related and complementary disciplines enriches the specific focus on literary translation; the Digital Humanities laboratory provides practical knowledge of IT tools applied to the humanities and translation.

The curriculum offers two options: the first allows students to study one language, chosen from French, Spanish, English, or German. The second allows students to study two languages. In this case, students can choose a first language from Portuguese, Swedish, Dutch, Albanian, Hungarian, Polish, Serbo-Croatian, or Russian. The second language can be chosen from French, Spanish, Portuguese, English, German, Swedish, Dutch, Romanian, Albanian, Finnish, Hungarian, Modern Greek, Bulgarian, Czech, Polish, Russian, or Serbo-Croatian (depending on whether the course is offered in the relevant academic year).

Specialists in linguistic, literary, and documentary disciplines,
working in one of the following professional contexts as:

• language professionals in cultural institutions and in diplomatic or consular offices;
• translators in the humanities (particularly for the second curriculum);
• language professionals in the cultural industry and tertiary sector, including publishing, radio and television media, literary and cultural agencies, the arts, and performing arts;
• assistants and consultants for the preparation and editing of texts for publishing and journalism;
• teachers of foreign language and culture in lower and upper secondary schools (subject to meeting the Ministry’s disciplinary requirements, completing the teacher qualification process, and passing the competitive examinations required by current regulations);
• organizers and producers of cultural events (in fields related to the program);
• foreign language correspondents and related positions;
• language assistants in public and private companies and organizations;
• intercultural mediation specialists in international political, economic, and social organizations.
