Course Overview 

The Master's Degree Program in Translation for Special Purposes within the LM-94 - Translation for Special Purposes and Interpreting degree class is a comprehensive two-year program designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the field of translation for special languages. 

To successfully complete the program and earn the degree of Laurea Magistrale in Translation for Special purposes, students are required to accumulate 120 ECTS. Throughout the duration of the program, the focus is on developing proficiency in both written and oral expression in two of the six foreign languages offered (English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Arabic) besides the Italian language. 

Our MSc program places a strong emphasis on specialized translation, delving into languages for special purposes across various domains and disciplines. Additionally, we provide a dedicated focus on the realms of publishing and professional writing. 

Key objectives of the MSc include: 

  • Theory and Practice of Translation for Special Purposes: Students engage with both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of specialized translation. 

  • High-Level Skills in the Translation of Specialized Professional Texts: The program hones students' abilities to translate complex professional texts with precision and expertise. 

  • CAT and MT Tools: Emphasis is placed on developing proficiency in the use of the  IT tools relevant to the specific fields of study and competence covered by the MSc. 

  • Linguistic Methodologies and Techniques: Students explore theories of linguistic methodologies and techniques, with a focus on analyzing language systems. 

  • Descriptive Stylistic/Linguistic Analyses: The program encourages in-depth analyses of written and oral texts in specialized fields, enhancing students' ability to critically evaluate language usage.

Occupational profiles 

Upon completing the program, Master graduates will be equipped to apply across a diverse array of sectors, spanning both public bodies and institutions and private companies. Their expertise as translators of specialised and professional texts (on a freelance basis or for translation agencies) encompasses proficiency in Italian and a minimum of two of the studied languages. Beyond translation, graduates are prepared to serve as linguists and consultants, contributing to publishing companies, as well as engaging in services related to multilingualism and multiculturalism. Their skills extend to the editing, analysis, and evaluation of informative and communicative texts. 

Furthermore, our graduates are well-positioned to pursue doctoral studies. These advanced studies focus on six foreign languages besides Italian, specialized translation, and linguistics, allowing graduates to contribute to cutting-edge research and further advance their expertise.  

 Teaching activities 

The Master's Degree Course features a blend of in-person lectures, language and translation practice sessions, and hands-on laboratory activities. Designed to provide a well-rounded education, the program encompasses language studies, translation, linguistics, and humanities computing. The syllabus features a diverse range of courses, including Italian Language for Special Purposes, Sectorial Languages and Areal/Geographical Dimension of Languages. As part of the program, students have the opportunity to choose one examination in the second year from courses of the same level offered at the University. Additionally, students can further tailor their education by selecting from a variety of Other Activities proposed each year. These activities contribute to the enrichment of their studies, providing diverse perspectives and opportunities for research and professional practice. 

Admission requirements 

To be admitted to this Master's Degree Programme students must possess a proper individual educational background and the minimum curricular requirements. A certified knowledge of English and Italian (for foreign students) at minimum level C1  and of the other foreign languages (English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Arabic)  at minimum level B1/B2 is also required.
