Access: European and American Languages and Literatures

The Master's degree in European and American Languages and Literatures (MEA) consists of two curricula:

  • 1. Languages, Literatures and Cultures
  • 2. Literary Translation

The "Literary Translation" curriculum is divided into two paths:

  • Monolingual course
  • Bilingual course

The "Languages, Literatures and Cultures" curriculum involves the study of a single language and literature, which can be chosen from the following options: French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Swedish, Dutch, Spanish-American and Anglo-American.

The "Literary Translation" curriculum includes two paths:

  • A. Monolingual: allows the study of a language and literature chosen from French, Spanish, English and German.
  • B – Bilingual: provides the option of choosing a first language and literature (1st language: Portuguese, Swedish, Dutch, Albanian, Hungarian, Polish, Serbo-Croatian or Russian) and a second language (2nd language: French, Spanish, Portuguese, English, German, Swedish, Dutch, Romanian, Albanian, Finnish, Hungarian, Modern Greek, Bulgarian, Czech, Polish, Russian or Serbo-Croatian (if activated for the academic year in question).

To be admitted to the Master's Degree in European and American Languages and Literatures, candidates must have a Bachelor's degree, a three-year university diploma, a four-year university degree, or another foreign qualification recognised as suitable. The Bachelor's degree must be in classes L-10, L-11 or L-12 (corresponding to classes 3, 10 and 11 of the Ministerial Decree 509/99 regulations). Four-year degrees in Foreign Languages and Literatures under the old system, three-year university diplomas and foreign qualifications recognised as suitable will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Required:

  • a solid knowledge of the Italian language, paying particular attention to written skills;
  • a good knowledge of European or American cultural and literary history, paying particular attention to the language or languages you intend to study;
  • a solid knowledge of the foreign language you intend to study, which is adequate for specialist study;
  • for those choosing the bilingual path, knowledge of the second language you intend to study (if it is one of the Western European languages) which is adequate for specialist study;
  • university-level knowledge of Italian literature.

The following requirements are essential for access to the course:

For monolingual courses: at least 18 credits in the foreign language of study.
For the bilingual programme:

  • at least 18 credits in the foreign language chosen as the first Western European language;
  • at least 16 credits in the foreign language chosen as the first Eastern European language;
  • at least 16 credits in the second language of study.

The minimum weighted average required for the foreign language is 24/30 for monolingual courses and for the first language of the bilingual course.

  • Students must also complete at least 12 credits in literature relating to the foreign language studied (for monolingual courses) or the first foreign language (for bilingual courses) over two years.

The minimum weighted average required for literature relating to the foreign language of study for monolingual courses and for literature relating to the first foreign language of study for bilingual courses is 25/30.

If the weighted average results in a decimal greater than 0.50, the sum will be rounded up; if it is equal to or less than 0.50, it will be rounded down. For combined Language and Literature exams, the weighted average of the three-year exams will be used.

Once the required qualifications for admission to the Degree Programme have been verified, credits acquired through enrolment in a single course may also be recognised to make up any missing credits in SSDs studied during the three-year period required for admission to the Degree Programme.

In the event of student mobility (e.g. shortening the course of study, transferring, changing programme or language of study), it is necessary to submit an application for admission to the Degree Programme (deadlines and methods are indicated on the Degree Programme webpage; the above admission requirements must be met).

Furthermore, students intending to enrol in a course of study at a university and a higher institute of musical or choreographic studies simultaneously, as provided for by the Ministerial Decree of 28 September 2011, must follow the same admission rules set out in this article.

Applications may be submitted for only one curriculum (either 'Languages, Literatures and Cultures' or 'Literary Translation').

After admission, it is generally not possible to change the languages for which a student has been admitted. Justified requests for changes may be submitted in writing to the Coordinator and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Degree Programme Admissions Committee. Students must meet the admission requirements at the time of enrolment, as required by applicable legislation.

Admission procedures

Candidates must follow a multi-step online process to be admitted to the programme. This begins with submitting a completed application form, after which a dedicated committee will evaluate their three-year programme. Successful candidates will then be able to proceed to the online enrolment process.

From July to September, an orientation committee is available to provide information on the programme offerings, admission procedures and other aspects related to the master's programme.

The application to verify the access requirements must be submitted online by filling out the form accessible via the following link: Form compilation.

Applications can be submitted between 1 July and 5 September 2025, and between 1 October and 10 October 2025. The following documents must be attached to the application:

  • A valid identification document;
  • A degree certificate specifying exams taken, SSD (Solid State Educational System) and grades for those who have already graduated;
  • For graduates who plan to complete their three-year programme by February 2026, a certificate of enrolment in the programme detailing exams taken, SSD and grades up to the time of application submission.

Alternatively, students may submit a self-certification relating to their three-year programme (Article 46 of Presidential Decree No. 445 of 28 December 2000).
To be valid, the self-certification must be signed and dated and accompanied by valid identification.

Applications may be submitted for only one curriculum (either 'Languages, Literatures and Cultures' or 'Literary Translation').

Upon each pre-registration deadline, the Degree Programme Coordinator will verify each application to ensure that all prerequisites for enrolment on the MEA Master's degree programme have been met. A list of those admitted, not admitted or provisionally admitted will be published on the university website after the applications submitted during the two pre-registration periods have been reviewed.

Candidates with a suitable CV who already hold a degree may enrol on the Degree Programme after the list of admitted candidates is published on the university website. Those who are still graduating and are admitted to the published list may earn their degree and subsequently enrol on the Degree Programme by 28 February 2026.
Candidates who have to complete essential admission courses and have already graduated must do so by 31 December 2025.
Those who have to complete essential admission courses but are still studying must do so before graduation by 28 February 2026.

Candidates who do not achieve the required average grades in language and literature for admission to the MEA degree programme will not be admitted.
