Admission – Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa

Admission to the Second-Cycle Degree (i.e. Laurea Magistrale/Master Degree) program in Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa requires a Bachelor's degree, a three-year university diploma, a four-year degree or another equivalent Second-Cycle degree or a foreign qualification recognized as suitable. Four-year degrees from the old system, three-year university diplomas and foreign qualifications recognized as suitable will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Admission to the Second-Cycle Degree (i.e. Laurea Magistrale/Master Degree) program in Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa also requires the following:

  • at least 18 ECTS in one of the languages of Asia or Africa (L-OR/07, L-OR/08, L-OR/09, L-OR/12, L-OR/13, L-OR/15, L-OR/18, L-OR/19, L-OR/21, L-OR/22);
  • at least 12 ECTS in historical and cultural disciplines related to the area of the first chosen Asian or African language (for confirmation of these requirements, it is recommended to contact the program coordinator before submitting the admission application);
  • at least 6 ECTS in a EU language.

*Only for curriculum 1 (MAA/1 - Languages and Literatures), and for justified reasons (which will then be evaluated), if deemed appropriate and approved on a case-by-case basis by the Admissions Committee, it is possible to study a second Asian or African language at the beginner level. This is permitted only if it enhances the student’s overall education and contributes to advanced knowledge in both methodologies and linguistic theories.

For the MAA/3 curriculum, a good command of English is required, demonstrated either by at least 12 ECTS credits in English language courses obtained during the undergraduate degree or by a B2-level (or higher) language certification, in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, issued by an accredited institution.

A dedicated Committee will assess the CV of each candidate, any other certifications deemed useful (e.g. language certificates) and the proposed study plan for the two-year program. The assessment of individual requirements, both for students meeting the requirements and for those with partial credit deficiencies, will be conducted by the Admissions Committee through interviews as per the attached schedule.

In the case of partial credit deficiencies in the scientific-disciplinary areas of the languages of Asia and Africa (L-OR/07, L-OR/08, L-OR/09, L-OR/12, L-OR/13, L-OR/15, L-OR/18, L-OR/19, L-OR/21, L-OR/22), the Admissions Committee may consider any language certifications obtained in the Asian or African language chosen. In this case, the Committee reserves the right to evaluate the certifications and assess language proficiency through an interview prior to admission.

If the number of credits in cultural disciplines related to the first studied Asian or African language is slightly below the required amount, or if deemed necessary by the Committee, a study program will be established based on a recommended reading list (see attached list) from the Admission Committee. The evaluation of requirements will be assessed in an interview. Admission to the Second-Cycle Degree (i.e. Laurea Magistrale/Master Degree) program is conditional upon passing the interview and subsequent verification of the student's preparation by the Committee.
