Admission requirements
To be admitted to the Degree Program Archaeology: Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean,
applicants must hold a three-year degree, a three-year university diploma, a four-year degree, another specialist or Master’s degree, or another foreign qualification recognized as valid under current legislation. Four-year degrees under the old system, three-year university diplomas and valid qualifications obtained abroad will be assessed by a Master’s Degree Programme Committee to verify eligibility for admission.
Applicants must also possess a general background in the humanities, acquired through formal study or other means, that provides a foundation for the analysis of the archaeological aspects of ancient societies. This background should include basic knowledge of the histories and cultures of the ancient world, an understanding of the core disciplines that underpin the degree programme, and familiarity with archaeological methods and their application to specific geographical and chronological contexts.
Applicants holding a foreign qualification should refer to the University's procedures for international students. International applicants who require a visa must complete the pre-enrolment process through the UNIVERSITALY portal. Validation of the pre-enrolment application does not constitute either the issuance of a visa or final admission to the programme. For programmes or curricula taught in English, applicants must demonstrate the required level of English proficiency in accordance with University regulations. For programmes taught in Italian, the University's Italian-language requirements apply.
The Master's Degree Programme Committee will assess applicants' eligibility for admission on the basis of the documentation submitted, including a self-certification of examinations passed, indicating the corresponding SSD/ GSD (Scientific-Disciplinary Sectors / Scientific-Disciplinary Groups, see list below) and CFU or university credits obtained, as well as an admission interview. Any deficiencies in the CFU credits required for admission within the relevant SSD/GSD may be remedied through credits earned by enrolling in and successfully completing individual courses. Such credits may be recognised for the purpose of meeting the admission requirements of the Master's Degree Programme.
Applicants holding a degree other than those listed below, and/or who only partially meet the curricular requirements, will have any relevant knowledge and competencies acquired in the archaeologies, cultures, and histories of the ancient world assessed by the Committee during the admission interview. Applicants who fully satisfy the curricular requirements are also required to attend an admission interview. The interview is intended to verify their academic preparation and to assess the coherence of their previous studies with the educational objectives of the Master's Degree Programme. No exemptions from the admission interview will be granted. Enrolment with the Student Office will be permitted only upon successful completion of the admission interview. The interview schedule and information on the admission procedures are published on the Master's Degree Programme webpage. The results of the admission assessment are also published on the same webpage, in accordance with the procedures established by the Programme and in compliance with current legislation.

Application submission
The Applications for admission, together with all required supporting documentation, must be submitted by forms in accordance with the procedures and within the deadlines established annually by the Master's Degree Programme and published on this webpage.
The deadlines and procedures for submitting applications to the Master’s Degree also apply to students intending to request transfers, course changes, career shortening or other forms of academic mobility.
The Regulations specify that, in cases of incoming transfer, course change, career shortening, or resumption of studies after lapse or withdrawal, students must first submit an application for admission to the Master’s Degree Programme so that their qualifications, curricular requirements, and personal competencies can be assessed. Only after admission has been granted may they submit an application for academic mobility.
The following documents must be attached to the application:
- Valid identity document.
- For graduates: a self-certification or official degree certificate indicating the degree awarded, examinations completed, corresponding CFU credits, grades obtained, and the relevant Scientific-Disciplinary Sectors (SSD) and/or Scientific-Disciplinary Groups (GSD).
- For students who have not yet graduated: a study plan or a self-certification/official certificate listing examinations completed and those still to be taken, including the corresponding CFU credits, grades obtained, and the relevant Scientific-Disciplinary Sectors (SSD) and/or Scientific-Disciplinary Groups (GSD).
- For applicants holding a foreign qualification: the documentation required under the University’s procedures for international applicants and/or holders of foreign academic qualifications.
Forms
Required admission interviews
Admission interviews are required for all applicants. No exemptions from the interview will be granted.
The interview will take place on the dates indicated by the Master’s Degree Programme and will be conducted by a Committee composed of two or more Programme teaching staff members. The Committee will assess the applicant’s possession of the curricular requirements, competency, and language proficiency on the basis of the submitted documentation and compulsory interview.
Credits acquired through enrolment in individual courses may be recognised in order to make up any missing CFU credits in SSD/GSD required for admission to the Master’s Degree Programme. In cases where the applicant holds a degree different from those indicated and/or only partially satisfies the required curricular requirements, the Committee will assess by interview the competency otherwise acquired in relation to the archaeologies, cultures and histories of the ancient world.
The individual interview is designed to assess the applicant’s academic preparation and the suitability of their educational background in relation to the learning objectives of the Master’s Degree Programme. Enrolment may be completed only after the successful completion of the admission assessment. The results of the admission assessment, together with the interview schedule, will be published on the Degree Programme’s webpage.
Applicants who are unable to attend the interview on the scheduled date and time are requested to contact the Coordinator of the Master’s Degree Programme by email as soon as possible.
Curricula
Curriculum MAC 1 – Archeologie del Mediterraneo
Curriculum MAC 2 – Archeologie dell’Asia e dell’Africa
Curriculum MAC 3 – Archaeology: Networks of Exchange
The Master’s Degree Programme has three curricula that enable students to tailor their studies to specific geographical and cultural areas while benefiting from a coherent and interdisciplinary academic framework. The curriculum Archeologie del Mediterraneo (Archaeologies of the Mediterranean) and the curriculum Archeologie dell’Asia e dell’Africa (Archaeologies of Asia and Africa) enhance the University’s traditions of study in these macro-areas. The curriculum Archaeology: Networks of Exchange, delivered in English, is dedicated to the analysis of contacts, exchanges, hybridisations and adaptations among cultures of the ancient world, from a trans-area and intra-regional perspective.
