Course Overview
The Italian second-cycle degree program in Comparative Literatures and Cultures is a two-year program in Degree Class LM-37 – Modern European and American Languages and Literatures.
To obtain the degree, students must earn 120 ECTS credits
The program is structured into three curricula:
1. West–East
2. European
3. Comparative Literature: English, Italian, Chinese
The Italian second-cycle degree in Comparative Literatures and Cultures is designed to prepare graduates for high-responsibility roles in both public and private institutions engaged in national and international cultural activities, and in the promotion of Italian literary, linguistic, and cultural heritage abroad.
Graduates will also be qualified to work in business and commercial consultancy, in Italian institutions abroad, in international cooperation and NGOs, and in the global organization of cultural initiatives. More broadly, they will be prepared for all professional contexts requiring an advanced knowledge not only of foreign languages but also of the societies and cultural heritage of other countries.
The program provides specific training in intercultural comparison, communication, and exchange, preparing graduates to operate effectively in Italian and international contexts.

The educational objectives of the program are:

- to ensure solid mastery of the theoretical and methodological tools required for linguistic and philological analysis, comparison, and critical evaluation of texts related to the literatures expressed in the foreign languages studied;
- to provide adequate knowledge of the theoretical foundations of linguistics, also with a view to their practical application in the teaching of languages and their related literatures.
The curriculum is structured around the following main areas:
- Language studies

- Critical and methodological studies
- Comparative, philological, philosophical, linguistic, and translation studies
- Area studies in history and culture
- Historical, geographical, and social studies related to the relevant linguistic and cultural area
Our program offers three distinct curricula:
- The West–East curriculum is designed to provide in-depth knowledge of two foreign languages, literatures, and cultures: one from Europe or the Americas, and the other from Asia or Africa.
- The European curriculum is designed to provide in-depth knowledge of two foreign languages, literatures, and cultures, both from Europe or the Americas.
- The Comparative Literature: English, Italian, Chinese curriculum is designed to provide advanced knowledge of the English language and English-language literatures, as well as of the Italian language, literature, and culture. In addition, it offers students the opportunity to pursue advanced studies in Chinese language, literature, and culture.
The Master’s Degree Program in Comparative Literature and Cultures prepares graduates to work in both national and international contexts. The main career opportunities include:
